Actual exchange that just happened:

"Andy, freight elevator is spelled f-r-e-i-g-h-t, right?"
"Um, XXX, yeah..."
Brief pause...during which I stared dumbfounded at the floor.
"So much for the "i before e except after c" rule, huh?"
Laughter by me. "Or in sounding like A as in 'neighbor' or 'weigh', XXXX. It helps to know the whole rule."
"Ha...yeah, I guess so."
